Antonio's fitness, Benrahma decision - David Moyes' West Ham international break to-do list
West Ham have ten players called up for international duty over the next ten days but Moyes will still be preparing for Sheffield United

West Ham entered the international break off the back of an incredibly dramatic 1-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
That scoreline might not suggest a cracking game but it was, especially in the final ten minutes of the match. West Ham took a late lead through Tomas Soucek’s second goal of the season before Ademola Lookman missed a 97th minute penalty, fluffing a Panenka effort straight at Lukasz Fabianski.
That leaves David Moyes’ side sitting in 12th spot in the table with 11 points from eight games and 20 per cent of the Premier League season already completed.
Ten Hammers players have headed off for international duty over the next ten days or so. Vladimir Coufal, Lukasz Fabianski, Darren Randolph, Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko represent their countries in the UEFA Nations League group stage, while Fabian Balbuena continues his 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Said Benrahma, first-time call-up Sebastien Haller and Arthur Masuaku are involved in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying for Algeria, Ivory Coast and DR Congo respectively.
Training will be a little sparse then at Rush Green over the coming days but Moyes will still get the chance to work with some of his squad before they return to competitive action against Sheffield United on November 22.
So what issues, if any, does Moyes have to solve between now and the resumption of the Premier League?
Michail Antonio's and Angelo Ogbonna’s fitness
Antonio has been a big absentee for the Hammers after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City last month.
Moyes recently admitted at a press conference that he was hopeful of a quick return for the striker: "We've got no timescale on him to say when we think he's going to be back. I don't think he's that bad and I don't think he's that far away,” he said.
Even if Antonio could be fit enough to play, Moyes has to be careful with Antonio’s history of hamstring problems. The manager rushed him back before when he was first in charge to play against Arsenal in a Premier League game and Antonio suffered another hamstring injury.
Likewise Angelo Ogbonna, who has been crucial and influential ever since the Scot returned to the club as manager. The Italian defender picked up a groin injury in the Fulham win and has been ruled out of international duty with Italy as a result.
The defender had a scan on Monday to determine the severity of the injury so we will wait and see what the outcome is. If it’s not as bad as first feared then Moyes will have a decision to make as the back five could have to change for the first time in nearly two months since Vladimir Coufal signed for the club.
Said Benrahma or Pablo Fornals?
It’s the question that has been rumbling along ever since Benrahma joined the club on loan from Brentford - him or Fornals on the left?
Fornals has been occupying the spot and playing well though he had an ineffective game against Fulham, eventually replaced by Benrahma in the second half. The Algerian made an impact - at both ends of the pitch - laying on the pass for Tomas Soucek to score the winner but then giving away the penalty that Lookman made a complete hash of.
It would be harsh for Fornals to lose his spot off the back of one iffy game and Moyes said as such post-match at the weekend.
“I hope you have seen Fornals and [Jarrod] Bowen’s class as well in recent weeks so we have got really good competition in those positions, Moyes said.
“Said is a really good player, I have had lots of players from the Championship that I don’t expect too much from too quickly.”
On the face of it, Moyes will likely keep Fornals in the side as he rates the Spaniard very highly. We’ll see.
Continuing the momentum
West Ham have had a good start to the season when you take into account that utterly horrendous fixtures they were handed prior to the campaign getting underway.
Moyes’ side has played Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool already in the first eight games.
Up next is Sheffield United, who are suffering a very bad case of second season syndrome as they are yet to pick up a victory and have just one point to their name. After that is the vastly-improved Aston Villa and then the hit and miss Manchester United.
Moyes will want to continue that good start and ensure that all the tough fixtures that his side has played so well in thus far do not go to waste.
The manager has preached before about having "something special" in east London with a squad that has underperformed over the past two years. Moyes has now been able to mould the squad into something he wants and needs to show that all the plaudits showered on the Hammers so far have not been misplaced.
